Most people believe that the name poker originated from the name of a French card game called ‘Poque’, which mean ‘to knock’. However the way the game was played, the rules were more similar to a Persian game called ‘Nas’. ‘Nas’ was played with five decks of cards. Bluffing is an important part in any poker game. This whole concept of bluffing was inspired by an English game called ‘Brag’ which was played with the help of only three cards. So we can see that poker had taken its inspiration from various games from all around the world.

Poker was first played in the United States in 1829 in New Orleans. During those initial days it was played with a 20 deck card where all the cards had values of ten and more than ten. The deck consisted of four tens, four aces, four jacks, four kings and four queens. The main goal was to bet who will get the highest five card hand. During that time the game was not named. Gradually it spread to the big boats on the Mississippi where sometimes the con artists used to cheat the travelers of their money.

It was during the American Civil War that stud poker originated. Many believe stud poker owe its origin to the cowboys of Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. The first version of stud poker was five stud poker. However original draw poker hogged the lime light till the origin of the popular seven card stud poker during the first half of the 20th century. During the 1980’s another variant of poker came around, the Texas hold’em. Though this was a lot similar o the seven card poker, it soon became a favorite among the players.

In the present day most of the poker tournaments are still based on the seven card stud poker. With the coming of the online casinos, this game has become more accessible to the people. In spite of the fact that so many variations of poker have been invented, still it remains one of the most popular card games.
