The 7 card poker itself is a variant of the stud poker. It is known as the 7 stud poker game. However in the modern times due to constant evolution of the mannerisms of the game, the 7 stud poker has come to be known as the 7 card game while the stud poker is now being used to refer to the Caribbean stud poker game.

The first point of difference between a 7 card poker and the Caribbean stud poker is that while a 7 card poker is a variant of poker game, the Caribbean stud is basically more of a casino game. In the 7 card poker game, the main aim is to create the best available five card hand out of the seven cards that have been dealt. Out of these seven cards, three are dealt face down and four are dealt face up. On the other hand in the Caribbean stud poker, the players are dealt with five cards instead of seven. Of these four cards are dealt face down while the fifth card is dealt face up.

The second notable difference between the games of a 7 card poker and the Caribbean poker is that while in the first case, the players compete with one another, in the latter case a single player competes against the dealer. The 7 card poker allows a maximum of eight players to play in the game. Like in other poker games, here in both the games the players would have to make a starting bet known as the ante.

The third difference between these two kinds of games lies in the manner in which the cards are dealt. In the Caribbean style stud poker, the dealer and the player are both dealt with five cards each right after the bets are placed. However, in the 7 card poker, the players are dealt with only three cards right after they have placed their bets. This is followed by a round of betting where the players choose to fold or call. The dealer then deals one card, faced up to each of the players. This round is repeated again twice. Then the last card is dealt to the players faced down. This accounts to a total of seven cards in the hands of the players. This is followed by another round of betting after which the players opt for a showdown.

Even though both the games are variants of the stud poker, still they are quite different from each other in the way the cards are dealt, the number of cards involved, the number of players involved and obviously in the amount of bet involved. The 7 card poker with at least four rounds of betting ensures a larger jackpot amount than that offered by the Caribbean stud poker.
